 Ocimnet.com - The magic of Harry Potter: The Exhibition lives on, or at least for a few more months.Warner Bros. announced yesterday that their "Potter" museum exhibition, which traveled from Chicago to Boston to Seattle, would be having a fourth and final stop in New York City at Discovery Times Square Marquee before continuing its journey outside the United States. The exhibition will open on April 5 and run for five months. Increasing the excitement is the fact that the New York exhibition will add new props from both parts of "Deathly Hallows" to the show's already vast collection. Perhaps we should expect some horcruxes on display? To be fair, Warner Bros. was already more than willing to show off the horcruxes to fans at the WB booth at San Diego Comic-Con over the summer. But there are plenty of other goodies that we would love to see specific to the final two "Harry Potter" films. There's everything in the Room of Requirement that will be seen in "Part 2," and Bellatrix Lestrange's Gringott's vault and the entirety of Godric's Hollow to swoon over. And we would love to see Fleur's wedding dress hanging up next to Hermione's Yule Ball gown. There's already plenty of reasons to go see The Exhibition if you're a "Potter" fan. Having visited the exhibit myself, my personal highlights included the Death Eater wanted posters and the giant self-portraits that Gilderoy Lockheart used to hang in his office. (No, I won't apologize for being a sucker for Kenneth Branagh.) But there's also Hagrid's cabin and a Great Hall recreation to look forward to, as well as an area devoted entirely to Quidditch.  Ocimnet.com - A massive earthquake off the coast of Japan Thursday caused the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center to issue a tsunami warning for Hawaii.The Warning Center originally issued a watch for Hawaii, but changed it to a warning at 9:31 p.m. The projected arrival time for the first tsunami wave in Hawaii has been revised to 3:07 a.m., according to the City and County of Honolulu's Department of Emergency Management. "A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii," the Warning Center said, in a statement. A tsunami is a series of long ocean waves. Each wave crest can last five to 15 minutes and cause extensive flooding of coastal areas. The danger can last for several hours after the initial wave as subsequent waves arrive. The 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Honshu, Japan at 7:46 p.m. HST. It struck about 230 miles northeast of Tokyo.  |

Although it has been only two years since the emergence of team buying on the Internet, it has become a new way of consumption popular among the Chinese netizens. Under this background, at the beginning of 2011 came news of Groupon, the biggest global team buying site prepared to enter China. There was a panic when the news came out, even some native group buying sites had instigated a boycott to it. However, after the China portal gaopeng.com went online on February 15, it was pulled out of service in less than 24 hours. The site was exactly built by the joint venture between China's leading integrated Internet service provider Tencent and fast-growing United States group buying company Groupon. Since then, the group buying giant came to realize that it has got a hard nut to crack. Launched in November 2008, Groupon made its first deal in October 2008 with a half-price offer for pizzas for the restaurant on the first floor of its building in Chicago. It was described as the fastest-growing company ever by Forbes, Groupon's business expanded from the United States to 34 other countries in 2010 alone. As of October 2010, Groupon serves more than 150 markets in North America and 100 markets in Europe, Asia and South America and has amassed 35 million registered users. Asian foray by Groupon began last year when it acquired daily deal websites in Japan, Singapore, the Philippines and China's Taiwan province. Groupon's first business move into China started with the acquisition of CityDeal last May. The German startup's management was absorbed into Groupon and eventually put in charge of its China initiative, which involves using funds from the company's recent $950 million investment, from Venture Capital firms including Andreesen Horowitz and Digital Sky Technologies, towards hiring up to 1,000 employees by next month. Groupon reportedly offered to pay job candidates as much as $30,000, more than quadruple what its Chinese competitors are paying. The huge wage increase is clearly meant to attract China's brightest to the company, but building a competent staff won't be quite that easy. Uncertain growth of Gaopeng.com makes the foreign tycoon Groupon a gloomy Road of China. To some degree, choosing Tecent as its Chinese partner is not a good decision. A strong combination Groupon and Tencent are both strong technical enterprises, but they are totally differed from not only cultural background but also business philosophy. Groupon grows in spurts of strength and expansion, which is a typical representative of the radical American culture. On the contrary, it takes Tencent a tremendous amount of effort to reach where it has reached today. To Tencent, a realistic appraisal of the task ahead is the essence of success, and a businesslike approach is the one most likely to win. As matters stand, launch confusion might stem from Groupon's eagerness to show investors its expansion into China as it gears up for a public offering this year. In contrast, Tencent elected to wait for more appropriate timing. As a result, local media reported that when Groupon then took unilateral action to start the website on February 15, Tencent resisted by pulling it off its server in China. Tencent always demonstrates self-reliance It is hard to find a combined operating product in t tens of thousands of Tencent enterprise's production lines. At the same time, for over more than 10 years of development history, it even harder to see acquisitions finished by Tencent, not to mention its combinations. The fact that Tencent is an independent Internet company which has long been the instant messaging and virtual currency leader in China, with more than 600 million registered users in China. Tencent is independent, better than the competition. However, it does not have too much experience collaborating with others, also it has a reputation for being a tough partner in China. Also, in the field of e-commerce, Tencent has not been notably successful. So it seems that there may some communication difficulties and benefit impairments to Groupon's cooperation with Tencent. The Chinese Internet bully In fact, Groupon needs Tencent to navigate China a lot more than Tencent needs Groupon to build a big team buying site. While Tencent has been the one of the most successful Internet companies in China, it would not settle for a compromise. Tencent has already owed its private team buying platform; the QQ team buying that has built combinations with restaurants, hotels, barbershops and cafes in many cities in China. However, there is no evidence that the QQ team buying is associated with Groupon. He said the waves could rise to up to a meter or less, and would hit Philippine eastern shorelines between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. "May ugong yan at malakas ang current. Prior to the Kyodo report, the company had said it had not received information on whether there had been any problems at the plant after the disaster. At the Fukushima facility, the site of a Tokyo Electric Power nuclear power plant, a spokesman on Friday that the plant's reactor cooling system was working, denying an earlier report that it was malfunctioning. Miyagi prefecture, where it is located, was one of the areas worst hit by the tsunami. Kyodo also reported that an emergency core-cooling unit had been activated at the Fukushima nuclear plant, without giving further details. The four Japanese nuclear power plants closest to the epicenter of the quake have been safely shut down, the United Nations atomic watchdog said Friday. The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center early Friday issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas along the United States and Canadian west coasts. The tsunami warning includes coastal areas of California and Oregon from Point Conception to the Oregon-Washington border. It also includes coastal areas of Alaska from Amchitka Pass to Attu. Tsunami warnings were issued Friday for at least 20 countries and numerous Pacific islands, including Japan, coastal Russia and the Marcus Islands, the Northern Marianas, Wake Island, Taiwan and Guam. Authorities in the U.S. territory of Guam said a tsunami could hit the island as early as 7:09 p.m. (4:09 a.m. ET). People along coastal areas are urged to evacuate, emergency officials warned.  Ocimnet.com - Apple's iPhone 4 and RIM's BlackBerry Torch 9800 both succumbed to hackers today at Pwn2Own, but two other smartphones running Android and Windows Phone 7 were unchallenged, the contest's sponsor said.Charlie Miller became the first "four-peat" at Pwn2Own when he teamed with Dion Blazakis to take down the iPhone. Both Miller and Blazakis work for the Baltimore-based consulting firm Independent Security Evaluators (ISE). Miller has walked off with winnings from Pwn2Own four years running -- 2008 through 2011 -- twice as many times as anyone else. "Every other year I've had an exploit ready to go for months," said Miller in an interview after the win. "But this was a different experience, working under the time pressure because we were working on [the iPhone] exploit the night before." Miller credited his partner for much of the work.  Ocimnet.com - A POWERFUL tsunami spawned by the largest earthquake in Japan's recorded history slammed the eastern coast on Friday, sweeping away boats, cars, homes and people as widespread fires burned out of control. Authorities said at least 32 people were killed. The magnitude 8.9 offshore quake was followed by at least 19 aftershocks, most of them of more than magnitude 6.0. Dozens of cities and villages along a 2,100km stretch of coastline were shaken by violent tremors that reached as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of kilometres from the epicentre. A utility company in northeastern Japan reported a fire in a turbine building of nuclear power plant. A tsunami warning was issued for the entire Pacific, including areas as far away as South America, the entire US West Coast, Canada and Alaska. Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency said at least 32 people were killed. "The earthquake has caused major damage in broad areas in northern Japan,'' Prime Minister Naoto Kan said at a news conference. Even for a country used to earthquakes, this one was of horrific proportions. It unleashed a 7-metre tsunami that swept boats, cars, buildings and tonnes of debris kilometres inland. Large fishing boats and other sea vessels rode high waves into the cities, slamming against overpasses. Upturned and partially submerged vehicles were seen bobbing in the water. Waves of muddy waters swept over farmland near the city of Sendai, carrying buildings, some on fire, inland as cars attempted to drive away. Sendai airport, north of Tokyo, was inundated with cars, trucks, buses and thick mud deposited over its runways. Fires spread through a section of the city, public broadcaster NHK reported. The tsunami roared over embankments, washing cars, houses and farm equipment inland before reversing directions and carrying them out to sea. Flames shot from some of the houses, probably because of burst gas pipes. "Our initial assessment indicates that there has already been enormous damage,'' Chief government spokesman Yukio Edano said. ``We will make maximum relief effort based on that assessment.''  Ocimnet.com - A massive earthquake has hit the northeast of Japan triggering a tsunami that has caused extensive damage. Japan's TV showed cars, ships and even buildings being swept away the Fukushima prefecture, after the 8.8 magnitude earthquake. Officials said a wave as high as 6m (20ft) could strike the coast. The quake struck about 250 miles (400km) from Tokyo at a depth of 20 miles, shaking building in the capital for several minutes. The tremor at 1446 local time (0546 GMT) was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks.  |

 Ocimnet.com - American Idol host Ryan Seacrest revealed on air that contestant Casey Abrams couldn't attend tonight's Top 13 results show because the 20-year-old singer was in the hospital. Abrams previously checked into a hospital two weeks ago complaining of stomach pains, and reportedly received a blood transfusion then. Seacrest didn't provide any details regarding what ailment sent the contestant back to the hospital today, and Fox had no comment. Abrams performed the Joe Cocker version of The Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends" Wednesday night, and received high praise from the show's judges.[via Todaysplayer]  |
