Connie Mack not running after all

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 07:36 AM PDT

Ocimnet.com - Rep. Connie Mack will announce Friday morning he will not pursue a U.S. Senate bid, after teasing reporters with a release Thursday regarding a "major announcement regarding the race against liberal incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson."

An aide to Mack told POLITICO Friday morning that Mack will cite personal reasons and his young family for declining a run, but instead will roll out his plans to get behind an effort to defeat Nelson.

On Thursday, a confidante close to Mack told POLITICO "there was nothing wrong with saying it's expected" that he would run. "You are not wrong to print this," continued the aide. But this reporter was clearly under the mistaken impression that meant he was going to go forward with a campaign.

"He was the front runner. He was expected, which is what you wrote, but he's going to announce he's not going to run," said the aide Friday morning.

The aide also confirmed that Mack would not be endorsing another candidate.

Once Mack's release percolated through Florida political circles, there was a great divide over his intentions. Several Republicans said they had heard both scenarios and one speculated that "I I think they're telling different of us different things to keep the intrigue up."

To amp up the intrigue, Mack scheduled a Friday press conference on the steps of the Fort Myers courthouse with supporters.

UPDATED @ 10:28 AM: In another example of the confusion even at the most local level, Mack's home county Lee County chairman Gary Lee called moments before Mack's announcement to say, "It's a go. All signs have indicated a green light . . . the same place as his Dad announced for the Senate."

Despite his name recognition, Mack would've carried baggage into a statewide candidate for his views on immigration and the complicated living arrangement he has with his wife, Rep. Mary Bono Mack.

Mack's exit from the contest leaves Senate President Mike Haridopolos and former Col. Mike McCalister as the remaining candidates in the race. Former House leader Adam Hasner has formed and exploratory committee and former Sen. George LeMieux is also weighing a bid. [via - politico]

Schwarzenegger And Cameron Head To The Rainforest

Schwarzenegger And Cameron Head To The RainforestOcimnet.com - Former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger excitedly tweeted this week that he was headed to the rainforest for "an adventure" with Cameron; all the while posting pics and some video of their journey. It's a good thing Arnold loves social media – otherwise, we'd have no idea Cameron and Co. were back in the thick of the controversy surrounding the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam project. (Cameron hasn't updated his Twitter account since Feb 3rd.)

You might remember Belo Monte, construction site of what would be the world's third largest dam, as a passion project for Cameron during "Avatar's" epic run at the box office. He even produced a short documentary on the dam's potential to displace tens of thousands of ingenious people (as well as the environmental effects) that appeared as part of the bonus content on the "Avatar" DVD disc set.

Unfortunately, while slow, movement towards the dam's groundbreaking is inching ever closer. Earlier this month, work was started on roads that will eventually lead to the $11.3 billion construction site. However, planners thus far have only received a partial environmental license; barring full construction from proceeding. "The struggle to resist the Belo Monte Dam and protect the Xingu river is far from over,"Christian Poirier, the Brazil programme co-ordinator for environmental group Amazon Watch told the UK Guardian. "Resistance on the ground will not waver."[via - ecorazzi]

Watch Movie Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) Trailers Online Free
Ocimnet.com - How can I articulate how stoked I am for the "Captain America" movie coming out this summer? Well, I'm more stoked about it than "Thor," that's for sure.

Captain America was The First Avenger, after all, and The Avengers are my favorite comic book heroes. So you might say he was/is the original Captain. The rum guy is just a wannabe.

Chris Evans stars as the movie's main character, Steve Rogers, a weakling transformed into a super soldier during World War II. What's cool is the way they digitally shrink Evans to make him look skinny before his transformation into the Captain. (I wonder if they digitally enlarge him, too?)

The girl is someone named Hayley Atwell. At first, I thought she looked like Claire Danes, but no dice.

"Captain America: The First Avenger" is due out July 22. [via - phillyburbs]

2011 Cherry Blossom Festival Dedicated to Japan

2011 Cherry Blossom Festival Dedicated to JapanOcimnet.com - From the Cherry Blossom Visitor's Center at Newark's Branch Brook Park, Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, Jr., together with the Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Branch Brook Park Alliance, announced Thursday the line-up of activities for the 35th Annual Cherry Blossom Festival. This year's festival will be dedicated to the earthquake and tsunami victims of Japan.

"Branch Brook Park has been put on the map with its 4,300 cherry blossom trees, the largest collection in the world," said Essex County Parks Director Dan Salvante. "Once again, we're here to celebrate the beauty of the cherry blossoms in this park."

Thousands of visitors from throughout the area and around the world converge on the park every April to see the first pink flowers bloom on the trees. Essex County has long sponsored events to coincide with the start of the season. The festival is a point of pride for Belleville, which identifies itself as the "Cherry Blossom Capital of America."

Salvante announced the festival's lineup of events, which kicks off on April 4 with the Cherry Blossom Gala hosted by the BBPA at Nanina's in the Park in Belleville.

Other activities include a bike race on April 9, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a 1-mile "Fun Run" and 10K Run on April 10, beginning at 8 a.m. There's also a Bagel and Blossom Lecture Series from April 11 to 15, at 8:15 every morning, at the Visitors Center. During lunchtime from April 12 to 14, guided trolley tours will be available throughout the park. Then on April 16, there will be a photography workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Cherry Blossom Festival culminates on April 17 with Bloomfest happening from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and featuring cultural demonstrations, children's activities, live music, a crafter's marketplace, food and other activities for the whole family to enjoy.

"It's a great day to be out in the park," said Salvante.

"The cherry blossom tree is symbolic of our partnership with Japan," said Anibal Ramos, a Newark councilman. "In light of the recent tragedy that took place there, this year we have a lot to celebrate and remember." He also added, "The Cherry Blossom Festival does a lot for this community in terms of attracting visitors and promoting our local businesses, and for this we'd like to thank Joe for his leadership as well as the Board of Chosen Freeholders."

"The cherry blossoms at Branch Brook Park has truly become a destination," said DiVincenzo. "So they not only talk about the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C., now they talk about the Essex County Branch Brook Park.

"We're dedicating this festival to the people of Japan. These cherry blossoms originated from Japan so we wanted to be able to raise money for them and give back."

Fifty percent of the proceeds generated from the Cherry Blossom Festival lapel pins will be donated to the Red Cross for Japan. The pins cost $5 each and will be sold at the Essex County Cherry Blossom Welcome Center during the first two weeks of April and throughout all festival events. Donations will also be received by the Center for the benefit of the people of Japan.

For more information about the festival events and how to make a donation, visit branchbrookpark.org.
