Scientists finally work out age of mystery manuscript

Posted: 11 Feb 2011 05:22 PM PST

The bizarre sequence of symbols, charts and figures have baffled the world of science for the last 100 years.

But now thanks to carbon dating, researchers have finally begun to pick apart the secrets of the Voynich manuscript, the most alien artifact of its kind in the world.
They have been able to determine for the first time that it was written in the early 15th century, more than 100 years earlier than previously thought.

And while they are no closer to understanding what the complex text actually means, putting a date on it takes them a huge step closer to discovering what it is really about.

Scientists finally work out age of mystery manuscript

What is known sounds like the plot from a film and makes the Da Vinci Code pale by comparison.

The manuscript was discovered by rare book dealer Wilfrid Voynich in the Villa Mondragone near Rome in 1912 as he was trawling through a chest of books.

He spent the remaining 18 years of his life trying to decipher its mixture of plants, circles and humans praying to the fountain of youth but died before completing his task.

The manuscript has been passed down through generations of scientists since then who have concluded that it is some kind of language - even if they don't know what it means.

The latest to take up the challenge were a team from the University of Arizona who dissected four 1mm by 6mm sections from four sample pages they were given by the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Yale University, which is where it is being stored.

Other experts also looked at the paints and inks that were used by the mysterious author. Dr Greg Hodgins, an assistant research scientist and assistant professor in the UA's department of physics, who led the project, said that they found some of the colours were consistent with those used in the Renaissance.

But what really helped was the carbon dating process, which is where scientists measure the amount of radioisotope Carbon 14 which occurs naturally in objects and decays at a predictable rate, making it possible to use it to date things.
That process allowed Dr Hodgins to pinpoint the early 15th century as the only time the manuscript could have been written.

Scientists finally work out age of mystery manuscript

'I find this manuscript is absolutely fascinating as a window into a very interesting mind. Piecing these things together was fantastic.'

'It's a great puzzle that no one has cracked, and who doesn't love a puzzle?' he said.

'Is it a code, a cipher of some kind? People are doing statistical analysis of letter use and word use - the tools that have been used for code breaking. But they still haven't figured it out.'

Dr Hodgins added that he found the text shows 'strange characteristics like repetitive word use or the exchange of one letter in a sequence.

'Oddities like that make it really hard to understand the meaning.
'Who knows what's being written about in this manuscript, but it appears to be dealing with a range of topics that might relate to alchemy.

'Secrecy is sometimes associated with alchemy, and so it would be consistent with that tradition if the knowledge contained in the book was encoded.

'What we have are the drawings. Just look at those drawings: Are they botanical? Are they marine organisms? Are they astrological? Nobody knows.'

Copper Abe: A Giant Penny Made of Pennies

Copper Abe: A Giant Penny Made of Pennies
Some people pinch pennies... others turn them into art.
Wander Martich took 84,000 pennies and turned them into... another penny.

A great, big penny that stands nearly 10 feet tall.

Martich says she suffered a rough patch in 2006 when she got divorced and lost her job -- and had to literally save pennies to make ends meet.

She even kept her coppers in a big jug.

Copper Abe: A Giant Penny Made of PenniesNow, she's back on her feet -- but when she heard about the ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids, the idea came almost naturally.

"Art was the only way I could tell a mass of people my story," she told Ripley's Believe It or Not!, which now owns her master work. "I wanted to share the message that anyone can do this, you just have to start somewhere. What matters isn't how much you make, but how much you save."

Martich spent up to 14 hours a day working on the piece for three months, which took sixth place at the competition.

The 1,200-pound penny measures 8 feet in diameter. The 84,000 pennies in them are worth a whopping $840... but to see honest Abe in this way is certainly priceless.

You can see the penny when it goes in display at a Ripley's Odditorium... or you can get a closer look right now in my special gallery, Ripley's World of the Bizarre. (Weird Art)

West Ham beat Tottenham to win Olympic stadium backing

West Ham beat Tottenham to win Olympic stadium backing
West Ham have won the backing of Olympic bosses in the battle for the 2012 stadium, BBC London has learned.

Olympic Park Legacy Company executives have decided the offer from the club - which would retain the athletics track - is better than Tottenham's rival bid.

They are expected to ask the company's board to announce West Ham as the preferred bidder on Friday.

The government and London's mayor will take a final decision but are expected to back the OPLC's recommendation.

An OPLC spokesman said: "It is pure speculation to say that a decision has been made.

"Our board meets on Friday. There will be presentations by OPLC officers of both bids and a vote to recommend a preferred bidder."

It would be a surprise if ministers and the mayor, Boris Johnson, overturn the recommendation of OPLC executives, who have spent the last few months discussing the various plans with both clubs in detail, when they reveal their decision in the coming weeks.

Reacting to the decision, Olympian javelin thrower Steve Backley said: "West Ham was the only real option.

"It was the only really viable bid that satisfied all the criteria.

"The Tottenham bid would have involved removing the running track which just wasn't an option."

But Lord Sugar, former chairman of Spurs, said: "It's totally flawed - it will be a white elephant.

"It will be a disaster for the taxpayer and we'll end up having a mothballed Olympic village.

"The Tottenham proposal is for an iconic anchor centrepiece."

West Ham are happy for the athletics track to be kept in the stadium and for the venue to be used for a variety of sports and concerts.

Tottenham's plans were to dismantle the stadium in Stratford and build a new football ground in its place.

The Spurs proposal has faced huge criticism from the athletics world, MPs and the public.

A recent BBC London poll suggested 81% of Londoners were against the proposals to rip up the athletics track.

The ComRes phone poll, carried out between 21 and 23 January, also suggested 72% of people in London wanted West Ham to get the stadium, with only 13% supporting Tottenham.

Ministers and the mayor are understood to be well aware that the Tottenham option would have been a "hard sell" to taxpayers.

Labour MP for Tottenham David Lammy told the BBC: "I haven't heard anything official but if this is right I think it is obviously the right decision.

"Their (West Ham's) bid in the end was for all London - and Londoners will be paying for this until 2017. Spurs' bid was for just one club.

"I hope we can get back to the White Hart Lane development which got planning permission just three months ago, for a brand new stadium with a capacity up to 56,000."

Nokia to Adopt Microsoft Smartphone Platform

Nokia to Adopt Microsoft Smartphone Platform
Nokia said Friday it has entered a "broad strategic partnership" with Microsoft whose Windows Phone will now serve as the company's primary smartphone platform. As part of a new strategic plan for the world's top mobile phone maker, which has been struggling against competition from Apple and Google's offerings, chief executive Stephen Elop also announced changes to the executive board.

"Alberto Torres has stepped down from the management team, effective February 10 to pursue other interests outside the company," Nokia said in a statement.

The new board, now called the Nokia Leadership Team, totals 13, with Elop and four newcomers — Colin Giles, Rich Green, Jo Harlow and Louise Pentland. Elop will give full details of the company's strategy at an investors briefing in London later Friday.

Analysts are expecting him to announce a major shake-up in an effort to halt a slide in Nokia's fortunes which has seen its global market share fall steadily as rivals prove quicker at getting products to customers. Earlier in the week, Elop warned that Nokia needed radical change if it was to survive "blazing competition" all around it.
