Can we determine the position of a clapper’s hands from the sound of their applause?

Can we determine the position of a clapper's hands from the sound of their applause?Martin Gardiner - Improbable Research — Primitive though they may be, given just a simple audio recording of a single handclap, is it possible to determine the hand-configuration of the clapper via a computer-assisted digital analysis of the sound?

Researchers Antti Jylhä and Cumhur Erkut at the Laboratory of Acoustics and Audio Signal Processing, Helsinki University of Technology, TKK, Espoo, Finland reveal that, yes, it is.

Their paper: INFERRING THE HAND CONFIGURATION FROM HAND CLAPPING SOUNDS (published in Proc. of the 11th Int. Conference on Digital Audio Effects (DAFx-08), Espoo, Finland, September 1-4, 2008) describes their experiments in detail.

Using a combination of FFT filtering and the Steiglitz-McBride algorithm on 40 recordings of claps (two clappers, 20 claps each), the team have discovered eight distinct classes of clap. Named as: P1, P2, P3, A1, A2, A3, A1+ and A1- The results showing too that "… it is possible to make inference of the hand configuration of a clapper given the resulting sound."

The paper also points to the possibility of more-advanced clap analysis techniques that may be of interest to security researchers – but which could perhaps be of concern to privacy-rights groups. Clapper Recognition. In the future, might it be possible to electronically identify the clap-signature of a particular individual embedded within a crowd of clappers? "The results also suggest that the claps of individual clappers may incorporate systematic differences from other people's claps …" say the research team.

BONUS: The Helsinki University of Technology Laboratory of Acoustics and Audio Signal Processing has created a software package called ClaPD – one of the very few, perhaps the only, cross-platform freeware fake-applause generation software. A video describing the software can be viewed (and heard) here (.wmv format)
ClaPD can be downloaded here: (Windows, Linux and OSX 10.5)

Watch a monstrously prominent solar flare burst out of the Sun

Watch a monstrously prominent solar flare burst out of the Sun
On Thursday, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory photographed this billowing plasma tower they've dubbed a "monster prominence." For 90 minutes, this flare twisted on the Sun's surface before collapsing and emitting material into space.

Here's NASA's method of recording this flare, which erupted over an area known as sunspot 1163:

[...] NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the event in extreme ultraviolet light. Because SDO images are high definition, the team was able to zoom in on the flare and still see exquisite details. And using a cadence of a frame taken every 24 seconds, the sense of motion is, by all appearances, seamless.

Windows Phone's new UI and Xbox games are most exciting aspects of Microsoft deal, says Nokia poll
Windows Phone

In search for feedback on its momentous decision to dump Symbian in favor of Windows Phone, Nokia has put up the above poll on its Conversations website canvassing opinions about what users anticipate most out of the new deal. There's no consensus choice, with the equivocation of reactions being underlined by the fact that the "Other" option was the modal response, however of the given categories, a UI refresh and Xbox-related gaming boons turned out to be most important. No surprises there, Symbian's touchscreen UI shortcomings are well known about while the Xbox tie-up has been one of Microsoft's big selling points for Windows Phone 7 since its start. We'd just ask Nokia to be quick about delivering on these things -- spending too long in anticipation mode won't be good for our health.

Posted: 26 Feb 2011 06:37 AM PST

I have an iPhone and iPod and naturally I use iTunes to manage my music library through these devices. I am a neat person but for some reason until some week ago a lot of my tracks was mislabeled, without the album cover, hard to find and I didn't have the patience to fix them manually. So I searched for a solutions and I found TuneUp a great application for Mac and Windows that helped me clean and maintain neat my iTunes library searching for missing or inaccurate ID3 tags in my mp3 files. I bought a license some and the result has been really impressive.

TuneUp docks on the side of iTunes to make organizing your music easy. The only thing you have to do is to drag the track you want to fix into the TuneUp sidebar and the application fixes automatically your mislabeled music.

The Cover Art feature automatically searches your entire music collection for music files that are missing album artwork and fixes them. Cover Art lets you review all matches before the album art is saved to the file. Or you can take our first pick and "Save All." Now you can navigate iTunes using Cover Flow the way it was meant to be used.

You can also stay tuned with the latest news of your favorite artists and buy tickets in just one click with the Concert feature.

TuneUp is available in two different options: a lifetime ($29.95) license or yearly license (price $19.95). You can also try a free version that cleans 100 songs and 50 album covers. I suggest you to try it!
